Scope of amnesty unclear 2/7/2007
5 February 2007

AMSTERDAM - Sources say that the Christian Democrats CDA disagreed with the Labour Pvda and the ChristenUnie on the scope of the amnesty.

In the end a broad amnesty scheme was agreed, though no one is yet certain how many asylum seekers will benefit, the Volkskrant reports.

The (still confidential) draft coalition accord stipulates exactly who can claim amnesty. It will be only those who applied for asylum before changes to the law on 1 April 2001.

A second condition will be that there are no ‘contraindications’ against the applicants, such as a conviction for a criminal offence.

He or she must also have maintained their ‘primary residence’ in the Netherlands since submitting their application.

It will be some time before the exact scope of the agreement reached is clear, however.
