| No Schiphol Privatisation |

AMSTERDAM — The municipality of Amsterdam, which is a shareholder in Schiphol, is firmly opposed to its privatisation, De Volkskrant reports.
The municipality vetoed the privatisation last September, preventing Minister of Finance Gerrit Zalm from going ahead with the procedure. Amsterdam and the current government have been struggling over the issue ever since.
Amsterdam alderman Lodewijk Asscher told the NOS on Tuesday that the conflict with The Hague regarding Schiphol would hopefully stop with the arrival of the new cabinet.
Schiphol is of great economic importance to the region. Selling it would bring in much short term revenue, but would prove disadvantageous for the city in the long run, Asscher said.
The new government members Jan Peter Balkenende (Christian Democrats, CDA), Wouter Bos (Labour Party, PvdA) and André Rouvoet (ChristenUnie) are expected to mention Schiphol at the press conference on Wednesday afternoon. According to some inside sources, the coalition accord does not support selling Schiphol.
