AMSTERDAM — The Dutch Universities Union VSNU has taken seriously students’ complaints about too few class hours. Many students’ academic achievements in the first years also leave much to be desired, the Union’s newly elected chairman Sijbolt Noorda told De Volkskrant.
Two weeks ago many university students took part in the protest against the so-called “new learning” programmes, which, in their words, allow for too much self-study and too little guidance from the faculty.
More intensive guidance will not be forced upon all students, but rather offered to those who want it. The 200,000 university students do not all work in exactly the same way, Noorda said.
The universities will now have more than one-size-fits-all learning programmes, providing for a more individual approach.
Noorda emphasised that the current alumni knowledge level will remain the standard and the prospective employers can expect the same from the future university graduates.
