AMSTERDAM - Teachers on the website Beter Onderwijs Nederland (BON) are voicing harsh criticism on the distribution of portfolios at the ministry of education under the new government, the Volkskrant reports.
The “problem portfolio” of secondary education and secondary vocational education will not be the responsibility of new minister Ronald Plasterk (Labour PvdA), but instead will go to State Secretary Marja van Bijsterveldt (Christian democrat CDA).
Critics say that rather than tackling the difficult matters, the minister will mainly concentrate on his pet projects of higher education, scientific research, media and culture. The urgent problems will have to be dealt with by a “lowly” state secretary who is not even part of the cabinet meetings.
One of the educators complains on the BON website that the inadequacies of secondary vocational education, “new learning,” the shortage of teaching hours, and the shortage of teachers are “apparently not priorities for the new coalition.”
