Balkenende IV sworn in today 2/23/2007
22 February 2007

AMSTERDAM – Queen Beatrix will swear in the fourth cabinet to be led by Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende this afternoon.

A new coalition of Christian democrat CDA, Labour PvdA and ChristenUnie has been formed in the 91 days since the general elections. This took somewhat longer than usual: the average time it has taken to form a government (since WWII) is 72 days.

The record for the longest formation process is held by the Van Agt/Wiegel government in 1977, which was not sworn in until 208 days after the elections.

The members of government will appear on the steps of the Huis ten Bosch palace after being sworn in.

The first official cabinet meeting will take place on Friday. Parliament will discuss the new cabinet’s government statement next Thursday.
