AMSTERDAM – New Public Health Minister Ab Klink is aiming to introduce a smoking ban in restaurants, cafes and night clubs within a year.
This is sooner than expected.
The coalition accord of the new cabinet does state that a smoking ban should be introduced in consultation with the catering sector but does not specify a date. The only deadline was the end of the government term in 2011.
Klink announced the possibility of an earlier ban on the NOS television programme on which the new ministers appeared on Thursday evening.
Klink’s predecessor Hans Hoogervorst had come to an agreement with the catering industry on a step by step plan which stated that the sector would be given until 2009 to reduce smoking. An evaluation of the results of that action plan will be presented this spring. Hoogervorst had said he would support a ban sooner if it turns out that not enough has been done.
