Schools miss out on funds 2/26/2007
23 February 2007

AMSTERDAM – Primary schools are missing out on funds intended to help underprivileged students because it is often not clear what educational level their parents have.

Since the beginning of this school year, the educational level of parents has determined how much extra money schools receive to boost programmes for underprivileged pupils.

But Marleen Barth, chairperson of the CNV Education trade union, says that many schools have difficulty gathering the right information.

The parents themselves are required to fill in a form indicating what educational qualifications they have. But many of them are unable to do so because they are illiterate or are ashamed of their low level of education. It is also sometimes difficult to figure out what educational level is indicated by foreign qualifications.
