Dutch troops hit roadside bomb 2/26/2007
26 February 2007

AMSTERDAM – The ministry of defence has reported that an all-terrain vehicle driven by Dutch troops in Afghanistan ran over a roadside bomb on Sunday morning. The vehicle was damaged but there were no injuries, the ANP reports.

The Dutch soldiers were patrolling north of Tarin Kowt in the province of Uruzgan, where they are stationed.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack via an Islamic website. They say that the explosion destroyed a tank of the "Dutch intruders" and killed all the troops in the vehicle. Statements from the extremist insurgents often turn out to be greatly exaggerated.

This was not the first time that the Dutch troops have hit a roadside bomb. Three Dutch soldiers suffered minor injuries from another such improvised explosive on 15 February.

The local population has also been active in warning the Dutch troops where bombs have been planted. The troops then clear the explosives from the site, the defence department reports.
