AMSTERDAM – The plan to start fitness sessions for nudists in a gym in the town of Heteren has drawn worldwide attention. Gym owner Patrick de Man says he has been approached from people from the US, UK, Germany and Belgium since he announced his plans at the beginning of this month.
The special interest organisation the Netherlands Federation of Naturists (NFN) says it will be the first nudist fitness programme in the world.
De Man says two gym members who are nudists suggested the idea to him. The Heteren business owner was looking for new ideas for his business and saw the nude fitness programme as a gap in the market.
"The thousands of responses on my gym''s website show that naturists have been waiting for something like this for a long time," he said.
In consultation with the NFN De Man has taken measures to refuse access to the weekly "nudifit" sessions to people who have ulterior sexual motives. The exercise areas are also fully screened off to prevent peeping-toms.
Participants must be nude to take part in the "nudifit" sessions, but instructors must be dressed. The nude fitness sessions are only open to participants 18 years and older.
De Man says he has not received any negative responses to his plan, not even from the fairly traditional area of Heteren.
