Balkenende IV debuts in Parliament 3/1/2007
AMSTERDAM – Balkenende’s fourth government will appear in Parliament today for the first time. The first motions will be submitted during the debate following the presentation of the government policy statement.

The SP plans to submit a motion calling for a parliamentary inquiry into the Dutch political support for the war in Iraq. The VVD will be calling for confirmation that the existing legislation for euthanasia and abortion will not be undermined.

The plan that has caused the most commotion of course is the motion of no-confidence that Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom wants to submit against Labour PvdA state secretaries Ahmed Aboutaleb and Nebahat Albayrak because of their dual nationality. The motion does not seem to have much chance of success.

Other discussions in the debate will centre on mortgage interest relief, the financing of the general old age pension (AOW), and moral issues like same-sex marriage and stem cell research.
