Netherlands to stay on UN council 3/16/2007
AMSTERDAM - The Netherlands wants to be a member of the UN Human Rights Council once again. Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Verhagen said at a meeting in Geneva that the country would like to serve another three years.

The Netherlands served on the council last year as well, but only for a year. The council was appointed last year to replace the UN''s Human Rights Commission.

That commission was dissolved because too many of the countries serving in it were themselves violating human rights.

Verhagen asked for support for the International Criminal Court in The Hague during the meeting in Geneva. He also said he lamented the fact that Sudan did not want to cooperate with a UN mission to Darfur.
