AMSTERDAM - The senate wants the government to make an active and significant contribution to a new European treaty. The boundaries of the EU and the powers of the EU government in Brussels must be explicitly stipulated in the document. The government must at the same time be clear towards the public about the importance of the EU so that there can be broad support for European cooperation.
This was one of the main ideas in the speeches given by the factions in the debate on the State of the EU today in the senate. This is the eleventh time that the annual EU debate has been held. The debate was also attended by Foreign Affairs Minister Maxime Verhagen, State Secretary for European Affairs Frans Timmermans and Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende.
