AMSTERDAM - Education minister Ronald Plasterk wants to halve the gap between the salaries of male and female employees of the national government within four years. Plasterk''s portfolio at the education and culture ministry includes emancipation issues.
Plasterk made this promise at a personnel management conference in Amsterdam today. He is calling on local and regional governments to follow suit. He will also be keeping an eye on this matter in the private sector, he said, via the labour inspectorate for instance.
Plasterk also wants 2 percent more women to be working each year. This would lead to labour participation of 65 percent of women in 2010, one of the objectives of the EU''s Lisbon agenda.
The minister also said that a third of the managers in business, government and education should be women. Only 12 percent of managers in business are women at the moment. Plasterk would like to see this figure increase to 25 percent by 2010.
