AMSTERDAM – Dutch people started smoking a bit more last year, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. In total smokers went through 25 billion packaged and hand-rolled cigarettes last year. That is an increase of 1.5 percent.
The increase is remarkable because there has been a downward trend in the amount of tobacco smoked over the past 25 years. The number of smokers has not increased however, just the number of cigarettes smoked.
864 cigarettes were smoked per capita in 2006, 4 percent more than in the previous year. The use of shag tobacco however declined.
