AMSTERDAM – Traffic congestion increased by almost 20 percent in the first quarter of 2007 compared to the same period last year. Traffic jams were both longer and lasted for longer periods of time. The Traffic Information Service (VID) announced this on Sunday.
This made the first quarter of this year the busiest quarter ever. More cars on the road and higher than average rainfall in January and February contributed to the increase.
The service says the busiest point was on the southbound A4 near Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk. The second busiest point was Hedel on the A2, heading in the direction of Den Bosch. Culemborg on the A2 towards Den Bosch was among the ten busiest points for the first time.
Traffic congestion increased by 60 percent in just a year''s time between Utrecht and Den Bosch. Traffic congestion in general increased by 35 percent over the past three years.
Traffic congestion is measured by multiplying the number of kilometres of traffic jams by the time they last.
