THE HAGUE – The large majority of secondary schools will not succeed in teaching enough hours by the end of this school year, Sjoerd Slagter, chairman of the Secondary Education Council, said on Thursday in response to reports in the Nederlands Dagblad.
Former education minister Maria van der Hoeven had announced at the beginning of this year that sanctions will be imposed on schools that do not satisfy the standard requirement of 1040 teaching hours.
The ministry may cut a school''s funding for example, demand that funds be repaid, or even revoke the school''s license.
The Secondary Education Council has recently been informed by many schools that they will not achieve the 1040 hours required.
"It may be the case that only 10 percent manages to achieve that," Slagter says. "It is quite an arbitrary standard, schools had a great deal of difficulty planning this current school year."
He says schools tried to meet the standard by scrapping meetings and excursions, for instance. "They are making an effort."
