THE HAGUE – The cabinet, employers, trade unions and municipalities reached agreement on Wednesday on helping 200,000 long term unemployed people find jobs. Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said this after the conclusion of the summit in The Hague on Wednesday.
The coalition agreement also included the objective of creating 200,000 extra jobs. Balkenende says it would benefit both the economy and social cohesion if as many people possible participate on the labour market. These 200,000 jobs are aimed at reintegrating those who are having difficulty finding work at the moment.
The prime minister pointed out that municipalities could use funds from their welfare budgets to subsidise jobs. Employers and unions can set down agreements in collective labour agreements. The cabinet too will be setting money aside for payroll cost subsidies to encourage employers to hire those who have been unemployed for a long time.
No agreements were made on Wednesday with regard to dismissal legislation. Balkenende says there continues to be a difference in opinion on this topic. Employers say the labour market will function better if it is easier and cheaper to dismiss workers, but trade unions contest this.
The prime minister said the cabinet will be looking into the dismissal system and will renew the discussion at a later date.
Despite this division, Balkenende was pleased with the result of the summit. "The differences in opinion did not stand in the way of results."
