ROTTERDAM – A trial project offering free public transport for people aged 65 and over has started in Rotterdam. The experiment will last for six months and is aimed at assessing whether the elderly are more inclined to go places if they do not need to pay for transport.
State secretary for transport Huizinga kicked off the trial in Rotterdam. People 65 and older can use travel for free on tram, bus and metro for a period of four consecutive months between now and December. There are about 88,000 people in this age bracket living in Rotterdam.
The trial is also aimed at familiarising the elderly with the OV chip pass that will be replacing the strip cards that have been used for regional and local transport until now. This kind of trial has already been held in other regions.
