Minimum wage for adults rises €13.20 a month
The minimum wage for people aged 23 and over will go up €13.20 to €1,469.40 a month on January 1, 2013. The rise stems from the official link between the minimum wage and wage rises in the collective sector. The rise means the over 23s must earn a minimum of €8.48 an hour for a 40-hour week. Youth minimum pay rates have also risen - from next year an 18-year-old must earn at least €3.86 an hour, a rise of four cents. The pay for 15-year-olds will rise two cents an hour to €2.54.
Immigration minister Gerd Leers is slowest to answer MPs questions
While ministries are supposed to answer MPs'' questions within three weeks, they take on average 33 days to come up with the necessary facts, according to research by the Volkskrant. The paper looked at what happened to the 10,000 plus written questions submitted to the outgoing government since it took office at the end of 2010. The slowest ministry to reply was Gerd Leer''s immigration department, which took an average 39 days to answer to a question. Fastest was the social affairs ministry which took 28 days - still a week longer than required.
Sahara sand is heading our way
There is a good chance that tonight’s forecast rainfall will lead to sand from the Sahara covering western parts of the country, RTL news reports on Friday. A cloud of Saharan sand is heading our way and will be brought down by the rain, RTL weatherman Reinier van den Berg says. The fine grit is grey and red and the sand cloud may lead to hazy sunshine and brownish tints on the horizon on Friday afternoon, Van den Berg said.
VVD senator picked up in corruption probe
Police have raided the home of a senator for the right-wing VVD party in connection with an investigation into corruption, the NRC reports on Friday. Jos van Rey, who has had a seat in the upper house of parliament since 2011 and is also an alderman in Roermond, was taken to a police station for questioning, the paper says. Offices at Roermond town council and the Limburg provincial council offices in Maastricht were also searched, sources have confirmed. According to local paper Dagblad De Limburger, the case centres on the appointment of Ricardo Offermanns, head of the VVD local party in Limburg, as mayor of Roermond. The NRC says Van Rey is a figurehead for the VVD in the south of the country who made millions through property development.
