Volkert van der Graaf, jailed for 18 years in 2003 for the murder of populist politician Pim Fortuyn, was released from prison on Friday afternoon, the public prosecution department said. Van der Graaf has served two-thirds of his sentence without incident and was therefore entitled to early release.
Care in the community leads to 30% rise in police complaints
The police were called to deal with problems caused by people with psychiatric problems 52,000 times last year, an increase of 30% on 2011, according to the AD. The increase is due to the rise in people being cared for in the community rather than in institutions, the AD says. ''Care in the community is not always actually there,'' Amsterdam police chief Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg told the paper. The number of crisis situations in the capital involving emergency institutionalisation has risen steadily and reached 1,800 last year, the police chief said. ''I know of some community police officers who spend 50% to 60% of their time dealing with confused people,'' he said. ''But if someone starts drilling in the middle of the night because they have not taken their medicine, there is no point sending round a police officer.'' Local health boards admit there are problems and say councils, housing corporations and health insurance companies should work more closely to minimise the problems. ''We know that nothing has been organised in some areas or that the health services are slow to react,'' said Mirjam Drost of the national GGZ platform, which represents patients'' interests. ''Things have to be properly organised if someone with health issues moves into a community.''
''Language problems lead to accidents at work''
Between 10,000 and 20,000 accidents at work are related to language issues, according to the labour market foundation Stichting van de Arbeid in Friday''s edition of Metro.
The foundation, which represents unions and employers, says important safety instructions are often not fully understood because of language barriers and not put into practice properly.
The foundation estimates between 5% and 10% of all accidents at work are due to workers not speaking Dutch well enough. In addition, more languages are used on the shop floor, the foundation said.
In addition, safety instructions are often written in unnecessarily complicated language, the foundation said. It has now issued a special handbook full of practical examples and help for companies with multilingual workforces.

Mathematicians choose business over school
The Netherlands has a shortage of maths teachers because mathematicians are being tempted away from schools by the high salaries and career prospects offered by the business sector. In the first four months of 2014, there were 298 vacancies for maths teachers in secondary schools, according to the mathematicians platform PWN, the AD reports. This is double the number of vacancies four years ago.
