Court Orders GFA To Pay Coach Ziese ¢630m
FIFA’s Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has ordered the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to pay an amount of US$ 71,083.95(more than ¢630m) to former Black Stars Coach, Burkhard Ziese.
Additionally, the court also ordered the FA to pay the amount with an interest rate of five per cent per annum from September 6, 2003.
The CAS order came following an appeal filed by the German coach against an earlier decision issued by a single judge of the FIFA Players’ Status Committee which also dismissed portions of claims made by the coach against the GFA (respondents).
Other reliefs by the coach were dismissed by the three-man court chaired by Ercus Starvart. Other members of the panel include Jacques Baumgartner and Manfred Peter Nan.
However, the cost of arbitration, to be determined and served on the parties by the CAS Court office shall be borne by the GFA while each party shall bear all of its own legal and other cost incurred in connection with the arbitration.
The $71,083 represent monies owed the coach as a result of the premature termination of his contract by the Ghana football Association.
It includes expenses on equipment, match observations, medicals, annual leave — holiday tickets and an end of term benefit of 16,000 dollars.
The court however stated that the coach (appellant) had no right to claim air tickets for his wife.
It also agreed with the earlier decision of the single judge that some of the amounts claimed, were not established as valid claims against the Respondents.
Based on this facts, the court awarded the amounts against the Respondents to be paid within 30 days after the day of the judgement, September 28, 2004.
But three months after the decision the FA has not paid the full amount plus the five per cent interest instructed by CAS.
Irritated by the uncooperative stand of the FA, Mr Ziese has reminded the FA of its obligations and has further threatened to drag it before the FIFA Disciplinary Committee to enforce its punitive measures. Efforts to get the FA for their comments have, as at the time of going to press, proved futile.
¨ MR Ben Abankwa, Afigya-Sekyere District Chief Executive, has advised sportsmen and women against the use of drugs to enhance their performance. He said the use of drugs by athletes and other sportsmen to enhance their performance was not only illegal but can also ruin their physical strength in the future.
Mr Abankwa was speaking at a football gala competition organised by Mr Osei Kwame Despite, a business executive officer for some selected fun clubs in the District at Penteng on Monday as part of the Christmas festivities.
Penteng Fun Club, Esaase Fun Club, Despite Fun Club and Lostic Fun Club of Kumasi PZ participated in the gala.
Mr Abankwa attributed the inability of some sports personalities to stay longer in their careers due to the use of hard drugs, indiscipline and disrespect and urged the sportsmen in the District to desist from acts that could ruin their sporting potentials in future.
Mr James Atta Dwabeng, a Kumasi based electrical contractor and co-sponsor of the gala, said the competition was aimed at bringing the youth together and also advice them from engaging in immoral activities during the Christmas period.
Penteng Fun Club beat Esaase Fun Club 4-3 on penalties in the final game to win the competition.
They received a set of jerseys whilst the Esaase Club, which placed second took home a football.
