Ghanaian born German national Gerald Asamoah says he has no regrets opting to play for Germany instead of the Black Stars.
After initial overtures to play for Ghana had been spurned by former Ghana coach Giuseppe Dossena, Gerald Asamoah went on to play for Germany and was part of the silver winning squad of 2002 and a bronze medalist at the World Cup in Germany.
Asamoah who is currently holidaying in Accra meeting with friends and family members including his grandmother of whom he speaks fondly, says anyone in his shoes would have taken the same decision.
“I’ve been to the World Cup twice, and the first time I got to the final and the second and the third positions so I am happy that Ghana did well at the World Cup but the decision that I took, I think anybody faced with that situation will think twice about it and I think it is a good decision that I took. Firstly I came to Ghana to play for the Black Stars but they didn’t take me so I went to play for Germany.”
He said he was proud to be playing for Germany and thanked God for that blessing but maintained that he still had not forgotten about his Ghanaian roots and throughout the World Cup matches, he followed every detail of the Black Stars games.
“Yeah really, I was so proud to see my country doing so well so I was always watching Ghanaian matches. Because most of the time when the Ghanaians were playing we were also playing or we were at training so I had to ask them how was the match and everything. I was happy with what they did in the World Cup because nobody expected that.”
Asamoah would laugh at a suggestion by Joy Sports’ Elloeny Amande if he could have proven the missing link in the Black Stars striking dearth, and replied that the team might not even have qualified at all for the World Cup.
“I don’t know, I don’t know because may be if I was in the team may be they would not get to the World Cup and I don’t want to say much about that but the guys did well and I think that the strikers will be doing well and others who are coming up and I hope Ghana will finally get the strikers to score the goals.”
