African player of the year shortlist announced |

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the top three nominees for the 2006 African Player of the Year Award following a vote by the coaches of member-national associations.
The three players are Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast/Chelsea), Michael Essien (Ghana/Chelsea) and Samuel Eto''''o (Cameroon/Barcelona).
Nwankwo Kanu and Mohammed Aboutrika failed to make the short list after they were also named by the CAF media and technical committees in a short list of five players last month.
The African Player for 2006 will be known at an awards ceremony scheduled to take place on March 1, 2007, in Accra, the capital city of Ghana .
Cameroon striker Samuel Eto''''o won the 2005 awards which was staged in Abuja, Nigeria.
Nominees for the other award categories will be announced in January.
