Tuesday, 09 January 2007 The second round of the premiership produced eight wins with victory going to the various home sides. Seventeen goals were recorded as across the eight match centres with Accra Hearts of Oak being the biggest winners after completing a league double over archrivals, Asante Kotoko.
The New Year has brought good tidings for Accra Hearts of Oak as the Phobians go top the standings with their 3-1 win over Asante Kotoko at the Robert Mensah stadium in Cape Coast. Hearts of Oak are now two points clear and still have a game in hand.
Two first half goals were all the Phobians needed to sail into the lead against a 10-man Asante Kotoko side in the hotly contested game with play held up for close to six minutes following a red card shown to Ahmed Toure for hitting Hearts of Oak goalkeeper, Laud Quartey in the 30th minute.
The Phobians managed twinge the Porcupine Warriors after the premiership’s most expensive signing, Eric Gawu scored his second goal this season since his 600 million cedi move from King Faisal.
On the stroke of regulation time before recess, John Cudjoe rather increased the tally for the Phobians to make it 2-0 when he scored against his own goalkeeper. Back from recess, Asante Kotoko introduced Kwame Obeng Darko and Stephen Oduro and that substitution appeared to have changed the pattern of play.
Kwame Obeng Darko pulled one back for Kotoko in the 75th minute from a powerful header. But that was not enough as Alfred Nii Larbi put the game beyond the Porcupine Warriors scoring from an Eric Gawu assist to make it 3-1 for the Phobians.
In Obuasi, AshantiGold revived their poor run in the league as they managed a 2-1 win over Sekondi Hasaacas at the Len Clay stadium. The Miners who lost the reserve fixture 2-3 in Gyandu though wasteful in the opening minutes of the game still ensured that they picked the three maximum points.
AshantiGold scored two first half goals through Opoku Agyemang in the 33rd minute before Alex Asamoah made it 2-0 in the 45th minute. In the second half, Samuel Ellis fetched one for Hasaacas but it came too late. King Faisal got their second round campaign off with a 2-1 win over Real Tamale United at the Sunyani Coronation park.
Goals from Edmund Owusu Peprah and Micky Ofosu gave Faisal the win which has upped their position on the standings. A second half James Boadu strike ensured victory for Berekum Arsenals as the Gunners beat Liberty Professionals 1-0 at the Golden City park.
Arsenals had to wait until the 67th minute before the club’s top scorer, James Boadu connected home from a loose ball around the penalty box of the visitors. Heart of Lions were forced to come from a goal down at home to win 2-1 against Bofoakwa Tano at the Kpando park.
The visitors drew first blood in the 6th minute of the game through David Sarkodie who beautifully pushed the ball through the legs of Lions goalkeeper, Stephen Ahorlu for the opener. Bofoakwa Tano held onto the lone goal to end the first half 1-0. Back from recess, Ibrahim Sulemana equalized for Heart of Lions before David Azumah got the match winner for Heart of Lions. At the Swedru park, Gamba All Blacks proved too powerful for Power FC beating the bottom placed side 1-0.
Both sides ended the first half goalless and Power FC looked to be coasting for a point. In the second half, the Black Magicians appeared to have found their spell as Bismark Idan scored the opener for Gamba All Blacks. In Tema, Real Sportive ensured that home advantage swayed in their favour as they pipped Feyenoord Academy 1-0.
The Tema-based side had to wait until the second half before picking the three maximum points. And it was Gafaru Mohammed who settled the day as he scored the winner for Real Sportive. Earlier on Saturday, Tema Youth also recorded a 1-0 win over Great Olympics. The premiership debutants scored on the stroke of regulation time through Ekow Benson.
