Mills, Political parties mourn Hawa’s death 3/22/2007
The Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Professor John Evans Atta Mills, on Thursday described the passing away of Hawa Yakubu, First Vice Chairperson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a great loss to the nation.

Prof. Mills, in a press release, expressed his sympathy to the children, family and New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the loss of Madam Yakubu, who passed away in a London hospital on Tuesday while undergoing treatment.

“I am deeply grieved at the loss of such a gem-of-a-politician who was rightly named the Iron Lady for her steadfastness and holding on to her beliefs no matter the odds,” Prof. Mills said in the release signed by Mr Koku Anyidoho who is in- charge of communications at the Office of the Presidential Candidate.

“Ghana has certainly lost one of its female political icons and I wish to express my sincere sympathy to…the people of Bawku and hope that amidst the shedding of tears we would all take consolation in the fact that the woman who Allah made a part of us, left her footprints in the sands of time and would always be remembered for who she was and what she stood for.”

Prof. Mills prayed that the good Lord Himself would find a peaceful resting place for Madam Yakubu.

Meanwhile the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) have in separate releases expressed their condolence on the death of Madam Hawa Yakubu.

The NDC expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Madam Hawa Yakubu and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) fraternity while the CPP said “her death is a big blow to Ghanaians in general and to women in particular”.

The NDC’s statement signed by its Deputy General Secretary Baba Jamal said the National Executive Committee of the party had received with shock the news of the sudden death of Madam Hawa Yakubu, the illustrious daughter of Ghana.

“The anguish that fell on National Executive members, who were holding a meeting at the time of her death was announced, is a clear manifestation that the NDC leadership held the late Hawa Yakubu in high esteem.”

The NDC said while the pain of her loss would take a long time to heal, it was the party’s belief that her immediate family, her constituents and the NPP within which she devoted her life and energies, would take consolation in the fact that Madam Hawa had left giant footprints in the political landscape of Ghana.

The CPP in a statement signed by National Chairman Dr Edmund Delle said it was dumbfounded about the death of Madam Yakubu and expressed condolences to the bereaved family, women groups and the NPP.

“Ghana has indeed lost an illustrious woman whose input in our (young) democracy was highly (commendable).”

The statement said the CPP recalled the major role she played on both the local and international political scene with her influence stretching from Liberia to Ghana where she was a member of the ECOWAS Parliament chairing the important Transportation Committee.

“The CPP believes that the youth in Ghana will emulate the good works of Madam Hawa Yakubu and build upon her legacy.”

She died in a London hospital on Tuesday.

Madam Yakubu, popularly known as "Iron Lady" for her resilience, forthrightness, determination to fight, was a former MP for Bawku Central, Minister of Tourism and Member of the ECOWAS Parliament.

Madam Yakubu, a native of Pusiga in the Upper East Region, was born in Tarkwa in the Western Region on March 24, 1948 to Mr Yakubu Awinaba and Hajia Azore.
