Accra Hearts of Oak’s former goal machine Ishmael Addo says he regrets scoring the winning goal in the fateful May 9, 2001 encounter against Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Protestations of poor officiating by Kotoko fans turned violent when some fans tore at plastic seats and hurled them onto the pitch, while police attempts at quelling the violence by volleying tear- gas into the crowd led to the deaths of 126 soccer fans.
The day has since been labeled a ‘Black Wednesday’ and said to be Ghana’s most tragic soccer history.
Ishmael Addo scored the late winner on the fateful Wednesday night after earlier canceling a Kotoko lead to give Hearts of Oak a 2-1 win over their opponents.
Ishmael Addo who defends the legitimacy of his goal, told Joy Sports he had hoped victory would bring joy to the followers of his side but was pained to learn that the victory he helped give Hearts rather resulted in the loss of lives.
He said he has had to play back the event in his mind several times and especially on memorial days.
Meanwhile the Chairman of the national supporters union of Accra Hearts of Oak (Chapters) has raised concerns about the non-disclosure of monies raised in aid of surviving victims of the Accra Stadium disaster.
Neil Armstrong Mortagbe has commended the government for the help given to victims so far but said corporate bodies would be encouraged to contribute more if the fund was given a credibility boost.
