Ghana 2008 progress pleases Caf 5/16/2007
The Confederation of African Football (caf) has expressed satisfaction after inspecting facilities in Ghana for next year''s African Nations Cup.

The five-man inspection team, headed by Caf executive member Slim Aloulou, said that Ghana''s preparation for the 20 January-10 February event is on track.

"We are pleased with the progress of work so far," Aloulou said after the visit, which ended on Monday.

"The current state is a tremendous improvement on our last visit. We are very confident everything will be in order for the competition."

It was the fifth inspection visit by Caf, who looked at hotels, training pitches, stadia, medical and communication facilities over four days.

With 249 days to go to the opening ceremony, four new venues are undergoing construction and refurbishments for the 16-team tournament.

Organizers say construction work at the Sekondi-Essipong Stadium is nearing completion with the installation of floodlights, back-up generators, carpets, floor tiles, toilets and other fittings speeding along.

Filtration, drainage and all earthworks on the pitch have been completed, with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) saying that the grass planted on the pitch is blossoming.

Slim Aloulou said he is impressed with the pace of work in north-lying Tamale, which was a major concern regarding accommodation.

Accra, the capital city, and Kumasi are the other venues under rehabilitation.

Despite the positive comments, Aloulou still called on the LOC to speed up work on the training pitches, which he said should be made ready four months before kick-off.
