The Confederation of African Football (Caf) has successfully mediated a resolution in the leadership crisis in the West African Football Union (Wafu). Nigeria''s Amos Adamu was elected unopposed as the new president by nine out of the 16 Wafu members at elections in Ghana on 14 April, in a move to oust Ivorian Jacques Anouma.
But another meeting on the same day in Abidjan maintained confidence in Anouma''s leadership, who was elected president of the organisation in 2004.
Now under Caf''s guidance Dr Adamu will only take over his role at the head of Wafu in April 2008 when Anouma''s term of office expires.
Adamu has already secured a US$4m sponsorship deal for Wafu with telecommunication company Globacom.
Meanwhile, Caf has announced that it will launch a new continental competition for local-based players only.
A working committee has been set up to format the event.
