Michael Essien grabbed the winner as Chelsea defeated Birmingham 3-2 to set an English record for unbeaten league matches at home. Essien eventually made way for Mikel John Obi, with a knee injury that could rule him out of Wednesday''s trip to Reading, but there is no doubting his class.

The Rams went ahead in the fifth minute of their return to the top flight when Steven Howard flicked on a long clearance by goalkeeper Stephen Bywater for Matt Oakley to fire home from 15 meters. Benjani Mwaruwari finished off a slick move involving David Nugent and Sulley Muntari to run clear and equalize in the 27th minute. John Utaka fired Pompey ahead with three minutes to go but Andy Todd equalized for the Rams with a diving header.
