Ghana''s athletics team has arrived in Osaka, Japan, for the 11th World Athletics Championships which begins on Sunday.
The team left Ghana for Europe last week to polish their preparations and moved to Osaka yesterday to acclimatise before the competition starts tomorrow.
With world silver medalist, long jumper Ignatius Gaisah, sidelined by injury, Ghana’s medal hope rests on world bronze medalist, Margaret Simpson-Senya who hopes to improve on her maiden performance of two years ago with another medal this year as well as Ghana’s female sprinters led by Vida Anim, silver and bronze medalists at the recently-held All Africa Games.
Anim, whose rating on the IAAF ranking has improved, will compete in both the 100 and 200m, as well as anchor Africa’s sprint champions made up of Gifty Addy, Mariama Salifu and Esther Dankwa.
Seth Amoo who won silver in the 200m in Algiers has also been registered for the Osaka event.
The African female sprint champions have vowed to win a medal despite the stiff challenge they are likely to face from such strong contenders as the United States, Jamaica and the Bahamas.
“ I anchored the African team to win the bronze at the World Cup last year, and I know we perform better as a team so we can win again,†Anim told the Daily Graphic in a telephone conversation.
She also said having fully recovered from her surgery which slowed her down at the All Africa Games, she was looking forward to putting up another good show which saw her win medals in both events at the World Cup in Helsinki last year.
Simpson will begin her event on Sunday while the sprinters will have to wait till August 29 to start their competition.
