Goalkeeper Richard Kingson collapsed after being accidentally smashed against the post on Wednesday, in an English League Cup game away to Blackburn. In the 40 minute, the Ghana international tried to deal with a David Bentley free-kick but, under pressure from Christopher Samba, he smashed his head-first into a post.
"Olele" needed treatment for neck and rub injuries and then keeled over as he tried to stand up. Kingson, who was laid out in similar circumstances against Chelsea, was stretchered off with a neck brace. He had been heroic until his painful exit.
Boss Steve Bruce said: "It was sickening. He''s in hospital and it''s a head injury so it would be wrong to speculate. But he’s conscious and we think he’s OK. We just had to take the correct precautions."
Kingson, making only his second senior appearance, had made a favourable impression before being injured. In the opening minutes he saved at point-blank range from Jason Roberts and later he had the ball covered as Bentley curled a free-kick wide. He was beaten twice by Matt Derbyshire, but first Damien Johnson and then Stuart Parnaby came to his rescue with goal-line clearances.
Up until the injury, Kingson had managed to keep a clean sheet but in the second half, Blackburn eased past Birmingham and into the Carling Cup fourth round with a 3-0 victory.
“I thought Kingson was excellent before he went down injured and he made two very good saves.â€
