Walker Drags Emirates To Court
Mr. Eric Kwabena Nuamah, a member of the Visco Walking Club is preparing to drag the Emirates Airlines to court for breach of contract.Mr.Nuamah was scheduled for a training tour and some competitions which had been lined up by an affiliate coach in the U.S.A.He went through all the airline and immigration security checks here in Ghana on 29th December, 2004, without any hitch only to be intersected at Dubai which happens to be a transit point of the airline with the reason that they doubted the validity of his visa. He pulled the necessary document in defense of the validity of his visa which was rejected. He was subsequently sent back to Accra aboard an Emirates Airline. In the year 2001, the foreign coach in the U.S. in the person of Dave McGovern invited a four man team including Mr.Nuamah for a Racewalking Champuionship, Monmouth, New Jersey.
This necessitated the Visco Walking Club to apply for visa on their behalf for three weeks that is from the 9th to 30th September 2001. The Embassy subsequently issued a five year multiple
visa to the said members on the 6th of September,2001,which would expire on 5th August,2006.A flight delay and the September 11th attack on the World Trade Centre compelled the coach to cancel the trip then. The same coach sent in an invitation for Mr.Nuamah for yet another assignment as earlier reported which resulted in the return of the walker through no fault of his.
On his return to Ghana, Mr. Nuamah reported the incident to the Visco walking club who pursued the issue by first checking on the validity of the visa from the American Embassy. They were then told that the visa was still valid and genuine. Letters were then sent to the Emirates Airline to refund the Airfare to Mr. Nuamah for which they refused in letters to the club on the 14th and 28th of March, 2005 as well as 11th May, 2005.The few questions that one would like to ask are; That are passengers traveling documents not checked by the airline before issuing tickets to them? Are the documents of passengers not checked before being allowed to board their prospective flights?
Why should the American Embassy confirm the validity of the visa whiles the Airline denies its validity? Should passengers travel half way of their journey before Airline officials return them to their points of departure? In any case this was not the first time that Mr.Nuamah was traveling out of the country. He has taken part in walking competitions in U.K, Maleysia and other parts of Europe.
