For the first time in the history of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), the party will use its upcoming national delegates conference to subject President Kufuor and his Ministers to a strict proof of their performance in government, according to the party’s National Organiser, Mr Lord Commey.
In a telephone interview with newsmen, he said the move is to get government accountable to the party since government is ruling on a manifesto which is an instrument of the party.
“This year’s conference will be quite different because on the agenda for the first time, the delegates will have the opportunity to have a chat with the President on issues of national as well as party concerns,” he pointed out, stressing that this would be a one on one close session with the President.
Again, he said delegates would hold all sector Ministers accountable for the various development projects taking pace in their respective ministries.
Mr Commey noted that the conference which will take place on the 6th and 7th of January, 2007 at Koforidua in the Eastern Region, would address the party’s successes and difficulties and find the way forward.
NPP General Secretary, Nana Ohene Ntow, on his part, stressed on the need to assess the performance of the government based on the party’s manifesto.
On the proposition for a constitutional amendment to create the position of an Executive Chairman in the party, he said: “As far as I am concern there is no such thing of constitutional amendment. It may be one of those speculations in the media.” The annual delegates’ conference has been part of the party’s machinery since 1992 and this is the 15th conference to be organised by the NPP.
