The ruling New Patriotic Party begins its National Annual Delegates Conference at the Eredec Hotel in the Eastern Regional capital of Koforidua on Friday.
The three-day conference is in line with the party’s constitution which mandates it to hold a national delegates conference, (the party’s supreme governing body) at least once each year for the formulation of policies and provide a framework for strategy as well as plan the party’s future.
It is under the theme; “moving forward in unity” and will be attended by about 1500 delegates from the 230 constituencies.
The General Secretary of the NPP, Nana Ohene-Ntow, has told Joy News that apart from an opening session, there will be a working session during which the party’s policies in government will be reviewed by delegates.
The interactive session will bring delegates face-to-face with President J.A. Kufuor who will be fielding their questions on how far his government has implemented the party’s manifesto.
Ohene-Ntow ruled out any amendments to the party’s constitution at the conference, highly speculated as a major item to provide for an executive chairmanship position in the party.
He agreed that there was a general need to improve working relations between the party and government owing to widespread expression of disaffection by party foot soldiers who believe they have been neglected after working to get the party into power.
Ohene-Ntow said every step taken in that direction will be a very important one and the interaction between the delegates and leadership, led by President Kufuor will be only one of several steps being taken to improve the contact between the government and the party.
It is also to send a signal to the rank and file “that the government is not and ought not to be alienated from party and vice versa.
“As regards agitations and so on, we are addressing all the concerns that party rank and file have brought; lack of motivation etc, but I think that this step that we are taking is one of the many steps we want to take to improve contact between the party as such and the ruling arm of the party which is now the government.”
The conference closes on Sunday with a church service and a rally.
