Friday, 05 January 2007 The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Mustapha Ali Idris has stated emphatically that he, as the political head of the region, would not endure any forms of intimidation and harassments from any member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against any supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the coming electioneering season. According to the Minister, it would be unacceptable and totally out of order for the NDC to continue to intimidate members of the ruling government that has all powers to rather intimidate the opposition.
Alhaji Iddris, who was addressing over 200 party delegates at the Northern Regional NPP delegates Conference in Tamale, was apparently accusing the NDC of using violent tactics in subjecting the NPP to the unbearable defeats in the 2000 and 2004 parliamentary elections in the north.
“I want to make it very clear to you that I as your leader will not tolerate any intimidation by the opposition NDC against any of our members. We are in government and we have all the powers at our disposal, so I don’t see why the NDC, who are not in power should intimidate us to win elections. If we are not intimidating them, then I don’t see why they should continue to intimidate us. I will never tolerate it at all, and I don’t think they will even make any such attempt,” he said.
On the other hand, Alhaji Iddris urged the Northern Regional NPP Executives and the entire supporters to demand from any of the over 20 presidential candidates who would visit the region, to contribute heavily to the building of the proposed NPP regional secretariat before offering their support. He quickly cautioned them not to, in any way, discriminate against any of the candidates but rather offer them equal support as members from one political family.
He also cautioned all the 18 district chief executives (DCEs) in the region to work in concert with the executives to find ways of restructuring the party in the various constituencies. The Regional Minister, however called on media practitioners in the region to endeavour to bring their views and suggestions on how the party could be restructured for victory.
Saying, “You the media owe the NPP government a duty of propagating its good policies and programmes to the masses, because it is the only government that has been able to provide good environment for you to operate”.
Speaking at the conference, the Regional Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Alhassan Yakubu Addoo asked the party members to do away with conflicts within the party and campaign for peace and unity.
According to him, the NPP had a golden opportunity over their opponents in the coming elections, due to the impressive performance and the developmental projects the government had brought to the people of this country.
The conference was to deliberate on matters affecting the organization of the party in the region, and to also pass any resolutions or make any recommendations for possible examination and consideration by the National Delegates Conference on January 5 to 7, 2007 at Koforidua.
The party took the opportunity to inaugurate the Regional Finance Committee and Infrastructure Committee to mobilize funds and resources for the party. The Regional Minister and his Deputy, the Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, all the 18 District Chief Executives, all regional executives and five (5) delegates from each constituency are expected to attend the National Conference from the north.
