Wednesday, 10 January 2007 President Kufuor has said that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has a strong and rich democratic tradition that makes it more preferable to the opposition National Democratic Party (NDC) which was birthed from a military regime.
“The NPP is a party in which one can find long-standing generations. The party has members in their eighties and nineties; generations in their seventies and sixties, generations in their fifties and forties and others in their thirties and so the party is always strengthened by the ideas of all these people.”
According to the president, decisions are always taken in the party, based on consultations and when party members in executive positions went wrong, the elders of the party were quick to correct them. Speaking at the party’s rally at Koforidua over the weekend, President Kufuor said a party based on respect for experience, authority and consultations could always stand the test of time. He said the NPP was a tested party which would forever grow in strength and dominate the political scene in the country.
In a related development, party members to the conference in Koforidua have praised President Kufour for availing himself to interact with them at the conference, which is the first of its kind in the history of the party. Selected delegates were given the rare opportunity to sit at table with the president as if they were in a cabinet meeting, to interact with him on a wide range of issues bothering them as party members.
President Kufuor answered all their concerns in a satisfactory manner, assuring them that his government was doing everything possible to make life comfortable for all Ghanaians, particularly party faithful. Their questions centered mostly on the smooth transition of the new educational system, the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), employment, interest rate, equitable distribution of physical developments and other issues.
One of the participants, Isaac Quarcoo from the Greater Accra Region, told Daily Guide that he was very satisfied to have sat face-to-face with the president to interact with him.
“I asked a question on high interest rate because I am a Nestle distributor and a businessman”. He said he recently went for a loan of ¢1 billion from the Standard Chartered Bank and the interest rate was pegged at 25.24%.
According to him, he listened attentively to the president as he answered his question and marveled at the intelligent manner in which he responded to the concerns.
“I realised from my interaction with the president that the man has a huge responsibility to be the chief executive of a country. He might be having sleepless nights on how to co-ordinate all the sectors of the economy,” he said. The Eastern Regional chairman of the party, Mr Yaw Amoabeng commended the innovation that enabled party members to interact so directly with the president.
“It is an innovation that should frequently be practiced to allow party members at the grassroot level interact with the president,” he said.
According to Mr Amoabeng, such a move would be enough to give all the motivation to party members to work hard toward the success of the party.
