MP Slaps Constituency Chairman With Her Shoes 4/4/2007
The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South, Madam Theresa Amerley Tagoe has been accused of slapping her Constituency Chairman, William Akakpo with her shoes and later having him locked up at the Korle Bu Police Station. According to the Okaikoi North Constituency chairman, John Owusu Afriyie, it took the Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Mr. Sammy Crabbe and top New Patriotic Party ( NPP) officials lots of efforts to have Mr. Akakpo bailed.

Speaking to Daily Guide yesterday, Mr. Afriyie stated that Mr. Akakpo had last Monday organised a meeting to deliberate on issues bothering the constituency but as he got to the meeting ground, he found the seats meant for the Executive being occupied by some ordinary members of the party.

When Mr. Akakpo insisted that those seats were meant for the executive and only they had the right to sit on them, one of the guys occupying the seats retorted that he (Akakpo) had anyway, been removed from office as Chairman of the Constituency.

The Chairman was alleged to have sensed danger, hence quickly dashed to the Korle Bu Police Station to lodge a complaint to obtain police protection since the ‘confusionists’ were alleged to have threatened him.

Immediately he got to the Police Station however, he was said to have been accosted by Madam Tagoe who had earlier gone to the Police to lodge a complaint that Mr. Akakpo had brought in some ‘machomen’ to terrorise the people at the meeting, leading to injuries and damage to furniture. The Chairman was consequently arrested immediately by the Police on the instruction of the MP and it took the Greater Accra Regional NPP gurus a hell of time to bail him.

At the time of going to press, the Greater Regional Executive members were said to be holding an emergency crisis meeting at the Regional Headquarters to address this issue of crude modus operandi of some MPs, to remove Constituency Chairpersons for their personal gains.

Reference has been made to the incidents at the Tema East and Okaikoi South Constituencies, where MPs Ishmael Ashitey and Nana Akomea allegedly masterminded the removal from office of the Chairpersons of their Constituencies, leading to confusion in those areas. Those MPs, it was observed, did not follow laid down procedures in addressing whatever their grievances were. It has been noted that according to the Party’s constitutions, no member could take any party case to the police without having sought to resolve it amicably.

The actions of such MPs, it therefore has been presumed, were demonstration of their fear of losing their seats in the 2008 elections. Efforts to get Hon Tagoe for her side could not materialise. D. Guide
