The government has set a committee to select developers and investors to develop the Bui hydro-electric dam as an alternative source of electric power.
The Bui Development Committee is expected to raise an amount of $6 million to start and complete the project.
Minister of Energy, Prof Mike Ocquaye told Parliament on Wednesday in response to a question on the status of the project.
The minister said the project has a potential of generating about 15 per cent of the national consumption of electricity.
Prof Ocquaye told the MPs that government is committed to developing the project but a few challenges must be addressed.
“”The key challenge to the implementation of the Bui project is the environmental impact which consist of the inundation of part of the Bui National Park and the resettlement of over 2,000 people.
“ In this regard, the impact of the flooding on fauna and flora as well as the resettlement of people has to be investigated and the necessary mitigation plans developed,” he said.
